Part of a documentary photography commission for the East Coast Sail Trust, capturing a taste of the type of trips they offer to schools and youth organisations. The ECST exists to preserve and maintain the Thames Sailing Barge Thalatta, and to introduce young people to the experience of living and working on board her.
I joined a group of eleven year olds from Norwich School on a five day adventure voyage, to photograph them as they worked as a junior crew on board Thalatta, helping with every aspect of running the ship. During the day they made coastal passages from port to port, sometimes stopping to take a trip ashore to a busy town or a remote creek inhabited only by seals. This part of the shoot focused on the night time routine on board, largely unchanged for the 50 years the trust has been operating. Children fill in the log books each evening, play some card games, read a book, then settle down to sleep in their hammocks.
